Pictures of our props and costume!

                     Costume:
These are the sort of clothes that our main character Hayley wore, white top, black jacket, brown boots, black trousers and a grey and white scarf
                     Props:
Our only prop that we used was a scarf, as it shows the weather was cold and it shows that she doesnt want anyone to see what is underneath

Micro and Macro Elements!

The micro elements of a text are the technical and symbolic features which you identify, recognise and describe the functions of. These micro elements for example lighting has one range of meanings and editing has another meaning. The macro elements are the meanings behind the micro elements.

Micro Elements:
Props - Dark grey and white scarf that Hayley wore
Lighting - High key, natural
Types of camera shots - Extreme long shot, Long/mid shot, shot reverse shot, close up/mid shot, extreme close up
Camera movements - tracking, panning
Diagetic sound - birds, cars driving past, talking, swings, feet walking over the wet grass
Non diagetic sound - melancholic, slow music put in during the editing
Location - Park

Macro Elements:
Props - Having a scarf worn by one of our main characters makes her seem quite insecure about herself, not wanting to reveal her pale skin to our other main character. Also the colour may portray as to deep colours also the white may portray that she has some innocence and natural.
Lighting - Using natural, high key lighting makes it easier for us to see the reactions on the main characters faces, also because it is a romance genre they aren't shot in dark lighting.
Types of camera shots - Using a combination of all the shots add together to make the film seem more intimate which then fits in with our romantic genre
Camera movements - Using a combination of the camera movements it shows both the main characters in a different world to each other.
Diagetic sound - The way that all the micro elements come together it shows both our main characters having an intimate conversation, which then may portray as to why are they having such a deep conversation.
Non diagetic sound - Putting on some sad and slow music in the background adds more impact to the narration that our main character and emphasises to the audience that something bad might be going to happen to one of the main characters.
Location - Having our film located at a park makes the theme of romance stand out even more as couples take long strolls round a park and it is thought to be a romantic place.

font ideas for our company name

These were our final ideas for our font type, and we have chosen both of these because they both fit in with our romance genre. We have decided as a group to use the bottom one because it looked better and we didn't want our font to look too romance.

Our company logo final thing!

We have chosen to use this as our company logo because it fits in with our theme of romance but without being too in your face and too much romance. We used the black and the pink because they both go together and don't contrast with each other. Also the pink may suggest love and the black could suggest hate which is two things you always have in a relationship.

Ideas for our company logo

We have chosen these as our ideas because we are doing a romance film so we wanted to keep something in the romance genre into our logo for example a heart or rings. Our final idea is a few of these put together as we couldn't decide which one was the best one to use.

Preliminary Task

What we were asked to do? How did you find each stage of the process?
-Our preliminary task involved each of our group filming someone in our group walking through a door into a room, then saying some dialogue to another person already in the room, and then the same person leaving the room. I found each of these stages easy to do after i had been taught all the camera angles and how to use the camera and sound equipment properly.
Write 3 things you learnt during the preliminary task:
- I learnt how to track somebody leaving a room or walking away without getting too much camera shake on the actual film, i learnt which camera angles were needed to look good with the right shot and also i learnt how to use the sound equipment to the best effect.
List three things that went well:
- The three things that i think went well was we got all the shots we needed in order to create our preliminary task, the dialogue was the right volume and we were able to pick the sound up easily and also editing all the shots together at the end all went to plan.
List three things you think could have been improved:
- I think we could of improved our task by taking more time in the filming and making sure everything was to the best of our abilities, also making sure we didn't get any equipment in our shots, and also listening more before we started so we could of got the editing done quicker.
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for your 2 minute film opening? if so, what?
- i think it has given me some ideas about the types of shots we could use and how to get the emotion into the shots.

Ratings of some films in our genre

Mamma Mia is a PG because there is some sexual references but they are only discreet and not frequent, there are no horror scenes, there is some mild bad language only and no violence is shown.
Romeo and Juliet is a 12 because there is some violence scenes which are appropriate for young teenagers, there is some use of strong language but it is infrequent, some portrayal of nudity but it is discreet and some sexual activity may be briefly shown.
P.S. I Love You is a 12 because there is some sexual activity which is brief and only discreetly portrayed, also there is some moderate language that is used but it is infrequent.

Titanic is a 12 because there are some sexual references but they are only mild and discreet, and there is some violence shown as the ship is sinking. Also its a 12 because it may be to depressing for younger children to watch, and younger children may find it hard to follow the storyline and might not understand what is happening.
Slumdog millionaire is a 15 because the story line may be too complicated for younger children to understand also with violence. While intense and somewhat graphic at times, its never anything other than realistic in its depictions. Sometimes it is tough to watch, but these moments are not in vain, as you will find out, everything that happens in the film does so for a reason.
The notebook is a 15 because there are sexual references even though at some points it can be more discreet, also there is some portrayal of nudity, even though there is no violence.
Love actually is a 15 because there are some tense and sad scenes that may cause upset to younger children, there are some sexual references and also some brief nudity, some strong language is used and there are references to drugs, alcohol and smoking.
Letters to Juliet is a pg because there are some kissing scenes but they are not frequent, also there are some mild language used but that isnt frequent either and there is no violence.
Remember Me is a 12A because there are some violence scenes but they are not too graphic for 12 year olds, also there are several love scences but not to much and there is no portrayal of nudity.
Valentines day is a 12A because there are some sexual scenes but they aren't frequent, also there is some mild language and some references to drugs, drink and smoking.

Risk Assessment

Location stills

These photos are of Bell Park where we shot our 2 minute film opening. We chose to film here because we needed a park that was local to our school that looked like a good location so we chose this park, but we did have other parks in mind for example Ludford or Middle Rasen park. Overall we chose to shoot at Bell Park as it had everything that we needed to include in our film opening. It didnt have much in the background to focus on so the main focus would be on the main character so that you know the film is based on her.

Costumes & Props

Props
Bottles of water – without the bottle of water we are unable to have the water fight
Scarf – to leave something behind with him when she walks away
Costumes
Scarlett clothes will be quite light and white to show her purity and innocence, as she's dying because its not her fault, because she's dying her hair will be loose and down because the only thing that is important is whether she will recover from her illness or not. If we put her covered in make up and really nice clothes, the audience wouldn't be able to put any answers to any questions that may be uncovered in the first minute or so and we want the audience to think what is going to happen to her. She will be also wearing grey and white scarf and brown ankle boots. Grey signifies the lack of character and it emphasizes neutrality. Brown means to convey a feeling of warmth, honesty and wholesomeness.
Tom - He will look like a normal everyday guy because they are just an everyday couple. To show that he is an everyday character he will be dressed in normal clothes for example jeans and a hoody with white trainers which will show through his characteristics to be pure and innocence like Scarlett. He will be wearing dark colour jumpers to show the dark side of him.

Script

Shooting Schedule

Storyboard

We have chosen the shots we have because:
  • Extreme long shot/establishing shot – to introduce the characters, and to show who the main protagonists are going to be and also the location of where the film opening is going to be set
  • Shot reverse shot – to show the expressions on each of the protagonists faces when they are about to break the news to each other and it can see the reactions on each others faces after the other person has said something.
  • Extreme close up – of the hands separating before Hayley leaves the park, and this shows the intimacy between the main protagonists
  • Long shot – this is to show how lonely Tom is once Hayley has walked away and the audience are left thinking what is he going to do now?
We have chosen these shots because the close ups’ and extreme close up’s show the emotions on the faces of the characters, and can set the mood of the film and because it wouldn’t be appropriate if we used a long shot because you couldn’t see the emotions properly.

History of the romantic genre

Romantic movies have a long history which has started since the 1890's and so has been going 121 years. Romantic movies which were produced from the 1920's to the 1950's often show painful love which means the main character doesnt always realise true love until the end of the film. Romance films are love stories, affairs of the heart that centre on passion, emotion and affectionate involvement of the main characters and the journey that their relationship takes facing many obstacles throughout the film. Many romantic films do not have fairy tale, wistful-thinking stories or happy endings although love serves a shield against the harshness of the real world.

Character development

Who will play them? and why?
Hayley Jacklin will play our main character Scarlett Coles because she is a good actor and she is someone that we can trust to play our main character as she is going to be dedicated and determined and work to her best ability.
Tom Manson will play our other main character Tom Smith because we have asked the drama department who is a good male actor and his name was mentioned as the best person for the job and he is also a very serious actor and will be someone who is dedicated to working hard.
What is the character like? and why?
Scarlett - Our main character is just a normal girl, who lives an ordinary life. She's quite an ambitious person and determined to work her way up to the top. Her character portrayal would be a happy character until her world is turned upside down, when she then becomes a shadow of the person that she used to be. We are going to portray her as a normal person because then it shows that its not just certain people that can get the illness, it could happen to anyone.
Tom - Our other main character is just a normal everyday guy who lives an everyday life. With a job, house and loving girlfriend that has a secret to hide. Like Scarlett he's an ambitious person who is determined to work his way to the top of the rank at work. We are portraying him as a normal person to show that he is no different to Scarlett. If we portrayed him as a character that is different to Scarlett it wouldn't go with romance conventions.
What will they look like? and why?
Scarlett - She will look like a normal everyday girl. Wearing only a slight bit of make up because she is dying and in her final days it shows that make up is not important, and that girls can be naturally beautiful without hiding behind layers of make up. Her clothes will be quite light and white to show her purity and innocence, as she's dying because its not her fault, because she's dying her hair will be loose and down because the only thing that is important is whether she will recover from her illness or not. If we put her covered in make up and really nice clothes, the audience wouldn't be able to put any answers to any questions that may be uncovered in the first minute or so and we want the audience to think what is going to happen to her.
Tom - He will look like a normal everyday guy because him and Scarlett are just an everyday couple. He will be wearing no make up to show that he's a real man and the tough side of him will show through and in contrast to that his soft side will be showed throughout the 2 minutes. To show that he is a everyday character he will be dressed in normal clothes for example jeans and a hoody with white trainers which will show through his characteristics to be pure and innocence like Scarlett. His hair will be scruffy and not covered in gel to show that he doesn't need to be covered in fake to look good.

Synopsis!

Scarlett is an ambitious person in life and determined to work her way to the top. She seems to be happy a great deal of the time but right at the start she finds the need to tell her boyfriend something. One thing that she's been hiding from him all this time.
The 20 year old reveals that she's not as happy as she really makes out to be. Underneath all her smiles and inside she's dying. She tells the truth that's been haunting her for months, which comes to feud between the couple. The two argue as to why she didn't tell him, but arguing can't change anything. If anything you'd think it would bring them closer together, well you'd be wrong.
Her boyfriend Tom turns to alcohol as a result. He doesn't help the situation by doing this and chooses to abuse her under the influence of the drink he has on a regular basis. She's physically and mentally dying now and without his support there's not a lot that Scarlett can do.
Through all her thoughts and struggles, Tom manages to overcome his addiction to alcohol and to look after her through every step of the way. But when he does decide to change, it's too late. Aged 20, Scarlett dies from a heart-stricken disease that's effected her for much time. Leukaemia gets the better of her. All that could be done, was done, and yet was not enough.

Blurb!

Young and enjoying life, 20 year old Scarlett Coles (Hayley Jacklin) has come to a point in her life when everything good is slowly falling apart. When Scarlett leaves her boyfriend Tom, he is left confused and wondering what secrets she has to hide. One situation could leave the couple torn apart, or maybe bring the two even closer together. Scarlett finds out what it takes to fall all over again.

Interview

This is Anna. Her favourite type of genre of movie would be romance films, and this is the genre of the film opening that i am doing. Also she is aged 30 so she fits into our target audience so that is why i chose to interview her.
1. What is the main thing you want to see in a romance film?
    - i would like to see something that puts the love of the main characters to the test
2. What would you wouldn't like to see?
    - anything that makes it looks too cheesy for example if he proposes its always a big thing, maybe it should be more low key and not to over the top.
3. Why  do you like romance films?
    - its just the sort of film that attracts more people my age and there is always a happy ending even if during the film things don't work out for the main characters.
4. Do you think romance mirrors true life at all?
    - It may not do for everyone but I think they should because everyone should have their chance of happiness even if along the way there are hurdles to over come.

Target audience and marketing

Target audience; Our target audience would be all aimed at teenage girls all under 35, and also people that like romance films, otherwise if it was aimed at unnecessary people they wouldnt watch it.
Marketing; I think the best place to market our product would be on TV in the adverts after 8 o clock because that is when most people in our target audience watches TV, for example after our during coronation street or emmerdale as out target audience tends to relax and watch soaps this time of the night, and also on the internet because a large population of our target audience uses the internet for social networking sites like twitter, bebo and Facebook. I could also place an advert on YouTube in at the start of a video or afterwards, or even down the side while there is a video playing. Another good place to market our film would be in teenage magazines for example 'ok' and 'shout'.

What certificate would our film be?

I think that our film would be a 12 because there would be issues with the male protagonist showing alcohol abuse and violence which many people are offended by however we will not show this to a large extent. Also there would be expressions and gestures used to imitate language. Between the main two protagonists there will be the portrayal of sexual activity only ranging to kissing without the detail of real sex. Even though there are parts of 15 in this film opening its not enough to make it a 15 as we aren't showing it to a real extent.

BBFC

BBFC: This stands for the British Board Of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video works for classification. Things that are taken into consideration are:
  • Discrimination
  • Drugs
  • Horror
  • Imitable behaviour
  • Language
  • Nudity
  • Sex
  • Violence
Central to all of the above is the context in which they are presented.

Some films that have been recently cut/banned are Human Centipede 2 and Grotesque as they were showing too much sexual torture and sexual violence and potential obscenity.

Planning - 8 Key questions!

1. Is it pratical?
Yes, because the idea is not difficult to do and we know what we need to film it.
2. Is it an idea that works to the strengths of the group?
Yes, as all the members have different strengths and the idea needs all the different strengths from each member.
3. Will it show off the skills you have learnt so far on the course?
Yes, by using all the different camera shots and editing we have been taught.
4. Is it something you can reasonably shoot and edit in the time available?
Yes, because we are hard working people and we will work hard to get it done on time.
5. Can you access/permission to shoot in the chosen location at the chosen times?
Yes, as we need normal everyday places that we can access all the time.
6. Can you organise lighting to use in that location?
Yes, as we need natural and high key lighting which we can get everyday.
7. Have you included dialogue? If so, will it work to shoot conversation in that location?
No, we havent included any at the moment but we will be writing some up soon.
8. Do you have guaranteed high quality reliable actors to play the characters?
We are not sure yet because we havent decided which characters we are going to use, but when we do we will make sure we get people that will work hard and are dedicated.

conventions of a romance genre!

Characters - a boy and girl. The boy isn't usually 'good enough' for the girl. The parents generally disagree. The girl usually ends up better off.
Mise-en-scene - high key lighting when things are good, low key when things go wrong. Bright colours are used in girls clothes whereas boys have dull colours. Lots of close ups to show expressions on their faces with a lot of two shots used.
Iconography - Dresses, the stream. Birds and flowers. Relaxing.
Narrative - The couple meet and fall in love, but someone disagrees. Typical feud/arguement or something goes horribly wrong for one of the protagonists, and they break up, and decide whether to get back together and try again or move on.
Theme - Love, love triangles, rejection, heartbreak
Sound - relaxing romantic music.

Diagetic - dialogue, birds tweeting, the couple kissing which reflects the mood of the film and when introduced to the main characters the audience can see that something is going to happen to one of them .
Non Diagetic - relaxing, slow tempo romantic music to help set the mood
This photo is a good example of a love triangle when the girl loves both males but doesnt know who to choose. If she chooses one male the other one wont be happy.
In this photo it shows a couple in love, and is set in the romantic place of the park which is the main setting of a romance film.

Analysis of audience - romance genre

Analysis of audience – romance genre
After analysing data on film audiences as a group from the UK Film Council, it is clear that there is a potentially huge market for us to target. Just over a quarter of cinema goers enjoy the genre (26% - pic 1, p.105) with 5% saying that its their favourite genre (pic 2 p.116)

Looking at demographic data (p.106), it appears that I should be mainly aiming my product at females all aged under 35 (43%), although it is popular with females over 35 too.

With regards to social class, there is very little difference between AB (27%), C1 (27%), C2 (25%), DE (24%) categories.
